Printed Matter:

Exploring Neuroscience Data Through Printmaking

About

My name is Irina Earnshaw, I am a cancer doctor and a PhD student in the McColl Lab at the UK Dementia Research Institute (UKDRI) at the University of Edinburgh. With support from a UKDRI public engagement grant, I am working on a project called “Printed Matter: Exploring Neuroscience Data Through Printmaking.”I am making screenprints using real scientific data from the UKDRI, which will be shown at the Edinburgh Science Festival in April 2027.

Aims

The aim of this project is to exhibit the wide range of scientific research that falls under the umbrella of "dementia research".I aim to provide a talking point to break down barriers for the public to interact with scientists. Stripping back complicated data to simple images, and interpreting it in an artistic way, provides a focal point to jump off conversations. This encourages us to discuss how the data was created, how it was made into art, and what scientists hope the data will lead to.Most importantly, it gives the public a chance to share their own ideas, questions, and priorities about scientific research.
